"Om Namah Shivay" : myth, belief, reality and poetry Part-3

The greatness of Mahasivaratri

Sivaratri falls on the fourteenth day of the dark half of Magha. It is  sacred to Siva. Observance of fast on that complete Tithi, worship of Siva  and keeping vigil that night in performing devotional service etc. to Siva are  the main features of the Vrata.

Once there was an excessively terrible vicious man who used to associate with cruel people. He was roguish  and of bad conduct. He used to terrorize all living beings.

With a net that evil-minded one used to capture and  kill fish incessantly. That wicked fellow killed different kinds of  deer, beasts of prey and porcupine as well as rhinoceros by means  of arrows. Sometimes he furiously killed birds. The sinner killed  Brahmanas in particular. The forester of great sins was wicked  himself and was a favourite of all wicked people. The wife of that  Puskasa was also very terrible, like him. Even as he amused himself thus, many years passed by.  He continued to be engaged in those sinful activities and much  time passed.

Once that sinful fellow sat on a Bilva tree at night with  the bow in his hand. He wanted to kill a wild boar and he kept  awake even without winking. He had stored some water in his  quiver, lest he should be distressed due to hunger and thirst. It was the fourteenth day in the dark fortnight of the  month of Magha (January-February). He was looking in front  for the animal and unintentionally he (plucked and) made many  Bilva (Aegle Marmelos) leaves fall down.

11-15. Sometimes in anger he plucked a number of Bilva  leaves and dropped them down. Wafted (by the wind) they fell  upon a Linga that was at the root of the Srivrksa (Bilva tree).  Sometimes that wicked fellow gargled and that water fell on  the Sivalinga. The leaves of the Bilva tree also fell. In such a  manner, by sheer good luck and happy coincidence the action of  that forester became a worship of Siva.

The wife of that Puskasa was known by the name  Ghanodari. She was vicious and she used to steal other people’s  wealth. She was engaged in committing sins.

The wife spent the whole of the  night thinking about her husband .At dawn when everything was free from impurities  (i.e. darkness), thePuskasi went to the forest in a hurry, taking  with her food for him to eat. Wandering in the forest, she saw a big river. On seeing  her own husband seated on its bank, she became delighted. She placed the food on the bank and began to cross the  river. On seeing (her), he brought the fish caught in his net. “Come quickly.  Take your food. I have observed fast throughout the day and  food has been brought for your sake. Said the wife.

That couple of pure holy rites took their bath in the  river. When he went (to the other bank) for taking his food a  dog came that way. All the food was eaten by it. The fierce wo man became infuriated and proceeded to kill the dog.

“Our food has been eaten by this sinful wretch". What  will you eat, О dull-witted one? You will have to remain hungry  now.” On being reproachfully told thus by her,  who had become a favourite devotee of Shiva, spoke to her:  “I have been gratified by the food that has been eaten by the  dog- Of what avail is this perishable body bereft of long life?  This ill-fated body of momentary existence is being worshipped  in the world. Those who are overwhelmed by emotional attachments and go on nourishing their body, are foolish ones. They should be known as sinners, excluded from both the worlds.  Hence abandon false pride and unrestrained anger. Be composed  by means of discrimination between good and evil. Be steady  by means of the intellect based on reality i.e. through knowledge  of reality. That fierce woman was extremely enlightened by then. Carrying out the rite of keeping  awake on the Caturdasi night in view of the connection with Sivaratri, he attained  that perfect knowledge which is undoubtedly produced at the  time of Sivaratri.

What good has been done today by me who has  been a sinner, a violent tormentor, an evil-minded fowler  interested in hunting?

I have been perpetually committing sins. How can I go  to heaven? How was the worship of Linga performed? Let it be  explained.

My curiosity has been roused much. I am asking you  for the exact state of affairs. Explain, О deity of great fortune,  everything in due order.

As these questions properly were put, (Virabhadra) described the Saiva rites entirely with great joy.

Mahadeva, the lord of Devas, Is vara, the lord of  refulgent ones, Mahesa, the consort of Uma, is delighted today. In the month of Magha, the worship of Linga was performed by you incidentally. It is the cause of the delight of Siva.  Undoubtedly you have become sanctified today. The worship  was incidentally performed on the Shivaratri night. The leaves of the Uilva tree were plucked by  you who were on the lookout for a wild boar. At the same time,  they fell on the head of the Linga. Hence you have become full  of merits, О holy lord. Similarly the great rite of keeping awake was performed  by you on the tree. The Lord of the universe is delighted at that  keeping awake. Under the pretext of watching the arrival of a wild  boar, you had no sleep on the Sivaratri night. Nor did your wife  sleep. The noble-souled lord, the most excellent one among  Devas, is delighted on account of that fast and keeping the vigil.  In order to please you, the lord of great magnanimity, the bestower of boons, granted you all festivities.

Devas and all living beings were watching. Dundubhi-dmms were  sounded. Bherls and many musical instruments were played. The  instruments like lutes, flutes and Mfdahgas went ahead of him.  The lords of Gandharvas sang; groups of celestial damsels  danced. He was  honoured with various kinds of umbrellas. He was brought to  Gandhamadana with great festivities and celebrations and attained the presence of Siva on account of  that holy rite. By fasting on the Sivaratri night, he attained the  greatest region. And that too by means of an incidental holy right attained Sadasiva. What then in the case of  those who have great faith in attaining Siva, the great Atman?

What is the benefit? What is its purpose? By whom was  it performed formerly? Wherefrom did this Vrata originate? By  whom was it laid down, О holy lord, formerly?

Lomasa ( a sage with exceedingly large lifespan) said:

When the entire universe was created by Brahma  Paramesthin, the wheel of Time also evolved formerly along  with the zodiacs. There are twelve zodiacs and the main constellations are  twenty seven in number, for the sake of achieving the objectives.

The Wheel of Time is very fierce with these zodiacs and  constellations. Accompanied by this Kalacakra ‘Wheel of  Time’, Kala sportively creates this universe.

Kala creates, protects and destroys everything from

Brahma down to a blade of grass, О Brahmanas. Everything is  connected with Kala.

Indeed Kala is very powerful. It is the only one of its  kind. There is nothing else than Kala. Hence all these visible  worlds are of the nature of Kala. There is no doubt about it. The leader of all the leaders of the world is Kala at the  outset because of The worlds are born  therefrom. The creation comes next. From the creation, Lava (i.e. the smallest unit of time) is  born. From Lava, Ksana (moment) is born; from Kana, Nimia  (i.e. winking time) is born. This occurs continuously in all  living beings.

Sixty Nimisas make one Pala.Fifteen days and nights  make one Paksa (fortnight). Two Paksas make one Masa (month); twelve Masas  make one Vatsara (year). Knowledge should be acquired from  experts by a person desirous of knowing Kala.

From Pratipad (first day of the lunar fortnight) if we  calculate up to the full-moon day, the fortnight becomes complete  (Purna). Hence full-moon day is called Purnima.

The day on which the moon is complete is called Purna  (Purnima). It is a favourite day of Devas. The day on which the  moon vanishes is called Ama by learned men.

It is a great favourite of Pitrs beginning with Agnisvattas.  All these thirty days have certain auspicious times. Listen to some  special features of them, О excellent Brahmanas.Among the Yogas (particular division of time; there are 27 such Yogas) Vyatlpata ; among stars Sravaa; among  Tithis ("Lunar days") Amavasya (new-moon day) and Purnimaа (full-moon day) and Sankranti (i.e. when the sun passes from one  zodiac to another)—these should be known as sacred ones for the  rites of charitable gifts. Ashtami (i.e. the 8th day in a fortnight) is  a favourite of Sambhu and caturthika (the 4th day) of Ganesa. The fifth day (is a favourite) of the king of Serpents; the sixth day that of Kumara (Skanda). It should be known that the  seventh day (is a favourite) of the Sun and the ninth day is a  favourite of Саndikа.It should be known that the tenth day is (a favourite) of  Brahma; the eleventh day that of Rudra; the twelfth day is a  favourite of Vishnu; and the thirteenth day that of Antaka (i.e.  god of death). The fourteenth day is a favourite of Sambhu. There  is no doubt about it. The Caturdasl of the dark half which extends to the mid-night is a Tithi (Lunar day) on which one should  observe fast. It is very excellent and is conducive to the attainment of Sayujya (identity) with Siva. The Tithi of Sivaratri is  well-known as the destroyer of all sins.

In this context they cite this ancient legend-

Devas were eager to achieve their purpose. Therefore,  they hurriedly went on churning the ocean. All those who are  overwhelmed by desires do not listen (to the advice of others),  because they become irrational and stupid. They should not be given many pieces of advice and  instructions. They are subject to Raga (desire) and Dvesa (hat red). All of them are averse to Shiva. With their sheer continuous exertion, they churned the  Ocean of Milk. Due to excessive churning, the poison called  Halahala was generated from the Ocean of Milk. It was strong enough to burn down the three worlds.  It came up to kill the heaven-dwellers. It went up still further  and spread to all quarters. The entire sky was pervaded by it.

Gods approached Shiva, he said "listen to my words with great faith and  attention. This universe consisting of the mobile and immobile  beings is of the form of Ahamkara (Cosmic Ego). This Ahamkara  creates, sustains and destroys. At the beginning of the universe,  Intelligence, Consciousness alone remained. It was devoid of Maya. It was quiescent and of the form  of Dvaita and Advaita (duality and non-duality). It was in  the form of intelligence alone characterized by existence and  eternal bliss.

"The Supreme soul, who supports the seven  worlds, with the use of Sattvaguna, and  sustains them as well, the one who resorts to  creation with the application of rajoguna, and  resorting to tamoguna destroys the same, the  one who is far away from the Maya (illusion)  of the gunas, we meditate upon such a  blissful, lord possessing spotless knowledge,  who is truth, bliss infinite, pure consciousness,  who assumes the names of Brahma, Visnu etc.  and who is attained only with the application  of eternal Sattvaguna."

"I offer my salutation to Siva, who is  pleased merely by offering a salutation to him,  who loves his devotion, who bestows the  complete devotion, who fulfills all the desires,  who is the form of truth, truthful, who  possesses the truth and the fortunes, at all the  three times, who likes and speaks the truth,  who is adored by Brahma and Visnu, and who  takes to human form by his illusion alone."

The third of the great gods of the Hindu Triad is the personification of destruction. The work of creation and preservation being undertaken it was necessary to provide an agent for that of disintegration or destruction, as things created are by an inexorable law liable to decay and dissolution. Siva therefore represents Time, endless and inexorable. Death itself is only a turning of the glass of Time, a rearrangement of indestructible atoms, and a gateway from one court of Life to another. To destroy, therefore, is practically to recreate, and Death stands at the gates of Life.

He is bewildering in the range and variety of his many-hued nature.

In Hindu writings no less than 108 different names are given to him, and most of them indicate separate functions.

On the slightest provocation they break forth and overwhelm his enemies, hence the attribute “ terrible ” ( bhairava ) given to him. A characteristic story is told in the Mahabharata : “ One day as Siva was seated on the Himalayas engaged in austerities, Uma, attended by her companions and dressed as an ascetic, came up behind and playfully put her hands over his eyes. Instantly the world became darkened, lifeless, destitute of oblations. The gloom, however, was dispelled by a great flame which burst from Siva’s forehead, in which a third eye, luminous as the sun, was formed. By the fire of this eye the mountain was scorched and everything upon it consumed.” This flame will one day, it is declared, devour the world.

Originally, when Siva was separate from Shakti, he was pure consciousness. He was without qualities, without form, beyond being and unbeing. When he was united with Shakti, he had attributes, O Brahmana. He had a form and divine features; he was with Uma forever.

Siva was visualised by Narayana as the master, the lord of the universe, lord of all the  gods, the Supreme deity, smaller than the smallest and larger than the largest. He has the  matted locks of hair over the head and is the infuser of life in every form He has a crescent  moon over the  forehead, and is clad in Tiger's skin. He is surrounded by many ghosts and  spirits. He is unborn and can never be sighted by the wicked people. He is the destroyer of  Andhaka and has three eyes and a blue throat and holds  a trident Brahma and Vishnu, also describe him as Mahesvara manifested as a great Yogi,  having effulgent splendour equal to that of the ten million suns put together, lie has also been  described as devouring the sky as it were, with a thousand crores of months and possessed of  a thousand heads and an equal number cf feet, having the sun the moon and the fire as his  eyes.Mahadeva lived in Himalaya mountain and absorbed the Ganges over his head.

Worship of Siva had started in many forms, and even  the various types of  as had been composed in his honour Not only could he protect his  devotees but also could grant them their desired wishes and the weapons. Siva came to be known in the form of linga  and was also established in the form of image  which bestows all the comforts and the  pleasure to the people. But the worship of Siva-linga (emblem, the most  important and the fundamental meaning of which could be a mark or a symbol) as well as his images bestow  welfare to the people, besides the moksa.

Another anecdote from the pure as:

Lord Sambhu wandered about in the forest Daruvana  for the sake of begging alms.

One of the ladies who was struck with wonder asked  Sambhu who endeared himself very much to her: “Who are you,  О excessively intelligent one? Why have you come here as a  mendicant? This is the sacred hermitage of sages. Why do you not sit here in our hermitage?” On being asked thus by her,  Sambhu said laughingly:

“I am Isvara, О lady with excellent tresses; I have come to  this holy place.” On hearing the words of Isvara (Siva) the wife  of the sage asked him: “(You say that) you are Isvara (Siva), О gentle Sir, of  exalted fortune. You are the lord of the Kailasa mountain. But,  О lord, how does it happen that you are begging for alms alone  and single?” On hearing the words spoken by him, the lotus-eyed  lady said: “There is no doubt that women really accord pleasure  by their touch unto man. Such pleasurable women, О Sambhu,  have been eschewed by a learned man like you!”...

I have related my little knowledge of the Puranas. Now I'd like to draw your attention without taking much time how Lord Siva influenced my life.

Let's talk about those who devote their time to acquiring wealth.

It is said ‘Change is the law of Nature.’ Everything in this world is ever changing. The process of movement and change is perpetual. The pendulum of time, the cycle of seasons, the movement of planets, the activities of animals, human beings, all natural elements, life, wind, water etc. are always changing. In this process of change, the chariot of wealth is no exception. A person may be poor today, but he can acquire wealth by dint of his hard work. A wealthy man can become a pamper with the passage of time because of his bad buck and foolish deeds. Man should realise this fact of life and these fore should not hanker after wealth and suffer from false pride and ego. He should acquire wealth through honest means, utilize it for good deeds and also help other needy, poor, deserving people by using his wealth for charitable purposes.

‘Earn a lot, give a lot. May you gather with hundred hands and give as much as with thousand hands.’

Rig Veda

‘There who give charity and look after the welfare of others remain happy always.’

Sãma Veda

I got to hear stories from my late maternal grandma and my mother. I decided on celebrating Maha Sivaratri when I was in college. By then I had quite a few surgeries and my brain surgery was imminent. Few "Friends" asked for going out, bunking class for pizza and movie but I was always limping and honestly on that day I was taking the vrata and had to fast but that heartless and unkind way squelched my thoughts on meditating for recovery by taunting and teasing me like something funny is going on and my parents had launched a wedding search looking for an intelligent excellent looking man like Lord Siva and that's why out of the blue I was keeping the vrata. I never confided to my sassy friends about my disease because of their small-mindedness.

At that age it discouraged me. But my diseases were relentless, I was unaware at that age. From the core of my heart I had worshipped Mahakal. I can recite the Mrtyunjaya Mantra in my mind, and I believe I got over every life-threatening surgery because of ☝Him. I chant the mantra during cyberknife or Radiation therapy and up till now I am alive.

He is my inspiration for the love of life despite such unsteady health and financial conditions. He puts words to my mind as I write poetry, enthusing me to find the right diagnosis and treatment for my diseases. You might ask why do I have to fight my ailment till the end of my life?

The complexity of their existence, the trials of maladies forced them to struggle to live. The will to live is an unstoppable thing. Most people live only when they are about to die.

I believe in my karma...past life karma and I want to attain good karma in this life so that after dissolution and reconstruction I don't suffer.I chant his mantra each night I feel like with determination and willpower I can move Mandar Mountain without the help of Vasuki and see a fiery ball and when I say,

My humble prayers to the my Lord with 108 names

But gave her a dazzling smile

Tarry awhile

The mother becomes a fierce Goddess

Climbing in her old age regardless

"Look around you, don't be blind"
