"Om Namah Shivay" : myth, belief, reality and poetry Part-3

The greatness of Mahasivaratri

Sivaratri falls on the fourteenth day of the dark half of Magha. It is  sacred to Siva. Observance of fast on that complete Tithi, worship of Siva  and keeping vigil that night in performing devotional service etc. to Siva are  the main features of the Vrata.

Once there was an excessively terrible vicious man who used to associate with cruel people. He was roguish  and of bad conduct. He used to terrorize all living beings.

With a net that evil-minded one used to capture and  kill fish incessantly. That wicked fellow killed different kinds of  deer, beasts of prey and porcupine as well as rhinoceros by means  of arrows. Sometimes he furiously killed birds. The sinner killed  Brahmanas in particular. The forester of great sins was wicked  himself and was a favourite of all wicked people. The wife of that  Puskasa was also very terrible, like him. Even as he amused himself thus, many years passed by.  He continued to be engaged in those sinful activities and much  time passed.

Once that sinful fellow sat on a Bilva tree at night with  the bow in his hand. He wanted to kill a wild boar and he kept  awake even without winking. He had stored some water in his  quiver, lest he should be distressed due to hunger and thirst. It was the fourteenth day in the dark fortnight of the  month of Magha (January-February). He was looking in front  for the animal and unintentionally he (plucked and) made many  Bilva (Aegle Marmelos) leaves fall down.

11-15. Sometimes in anger he plucked a number of Bilva  leaves and dropped them down. Wafted (by the wind) they fell  upon a Linga that was at the root of the Srivrksa (Bilva tree).  Sometimes that wicked fellow gargled and that water fell on  the Sivalinga. The leaves of the Bilva tree also fell. In such a  manner, by sheer good luck and happy coincidence the action of  that forester became a worship of Siva.

The wife of that Puskasa was known by the name  Ghanodari. She was vicious and she used to steal other people’s  wealth. She was engaged in committing sins.

The wife spent the whole of the  night thinking about her husband .At dawn when everything was free from impurities  (i.e. darkness), thePuskasi went to the forest in a hurry, taking  with her food for him to eat. Wandering in the forest, she saw a big river. On seeing  her own husband seated on its bank, she became delighted. She placed the food on the bank and began to cross the  river. On seeing (her), he brought the fish caught in his net. “Come quickly.  Take your food. I have observed fast throughout the day and  food has been brought for your sake. Said the wife.

That couple of pure holy rites took their bath in the  river. When he went (to the other bank) for taking his food a  dog came that way. All the food was eaten by it. The fierce wo man became infuriated and proceeded to kill the dog.

“Our food has been eaten by this sinful wretch". What  will you eat, О dull-witted one? You will have to remain hungry  now.” On being reproachfully told thus by her,  who had become a favourite devotee of Shiva, spoke to her:  “I have been gratified by the food that has been eaten by the  dog- Of what avail is this perishable body bereft of long life?  This ill-fated body of momentary existence is being worshipped  in the world. Those who are overwhelmed by emotional attachments and go on nourishing their body, are foolish ones. They should be known as sinners, excluded from both the worlds.  Hence abandon false pride and unrestrained anger. Be composed  by means of discrimination between good and evil. Be steady  by means of the intellect based on reality i.e. through knowledge  of reality. That fierce woman was extremely enlightened by then. Carrying out the rite of keeping  awake on the Caturdasi night in view of the connection with Sivaratri, he attained  that perfect knowledge which is undoubtedly produced at the  time of Sivaratri.

What good has been done today by me who has  been a sinner, a violent tormentor, an evil-minded fowler  interested in hunting?

I have been perpetually committing sins. How can I go  to heaven? How was the worship of Linga performed? Let it be  explained.

My curiosity has been roused much. I am asking you  for the exact state of affairs. Explain, О deity of great fortune,  everything in due order.

As these questions properly were put, (Virabhadra) described the Saiva rites entirely with great joy.

Mahadeva, the lord of Devas, Is vara, the lord of  refulgent ones, Mahesa, the consort of Uma, is delighted today. In the month of Magha, the worship of Linga was performed by you incidentally. It is the cause of the delight of Siva.  Undoubtedly you have become sanctified today. The worship  was incidentally performed on the Shivaratri night. The leaves of the Uilva tree were plucked by  you who were on the lookout for a wild boar. At the same time,  they fell on the head of the Linga. Hence you have become full  of merits, О holy lord. Similarly the great rite of keeping awake was performed  by you on the tree. The Lord of the universe is delighted at that  keeping awake. Under the pretext of watching the arrival of a wild  boar, you had no sleep on the Sivaratri night. Nor did your wife  sleep. The noble-souled lord, the most excellent one among  Devas, is delighted on account of that fast and keeping the vigil.  In order to please you, the lord of great magnanimity, the bestower of boons, granted you all festivities.

Devas and all living beings were watching. Dundubhi-dmms were  sounded. Bherls and many musical instruments were played. The  instruments like lutes, flutes and Mfdahgas went ahead of him.  The lords of Gandharvas sang; groups of celestial damsels  danced. He was  honoured with various kinds of umbrellas. He was brought to  Gandhamadana with great festivities and celebrations and attained the presence of Siva on account of  that holy rite. By fasting on the Sivaratri night, he attained the  greatest region. And that too by means of an incidental holy right attained Sadasiva. What then in the case of  those who have great faith in attaining Siva, the great Atman?

What is the benefit? What is its purpose? By whom was  it performed formerly? Wherefrom did this Vrata originate? By  whom was it laid down, О holy lord, formerly?

Lomasa ( a sage with exceedingly large lifespan) said:

When the entire universe was created by Brahma  Paramesthin, the wheel of Time also evolved formerly along  with the zodiacs. There are twelve zodiacs and the main constellations are  twenty seven in number, for the sake of achieving the objectives.

The Wheel of Time is very fierce with these zodiacs and  constellations. Accompanied by this Kalacakra ‘Wheel of  Time’, Kala sportively creates this universe.

Kala creates, protects and destroys everything from

Brahma down to a blade of grass, О Brahmanas. Everything is  connected with Kala.

Indeed Kala is very powerful. It is the only one of its  kind. There is nothing else than Kala. Hence all these visible  worlds are of the nature of Kala. There is no doubt about it. The leader of all the leaders of the world is Kala at the  outset because of The worlds are born  therefrom. The creation comes next. From the creation, Lava (i.e. the smallest unit of time) is  born. From Lava, Ksana (moment) is born; from Kana, Nimia  (i.e. winking time) is born. This occurs continuously in all  living beings.

Sixty Nimisas make one Pala.Fifteen days and nights  make one Paksa (fortnight). Two Paksas make one Masa (month); twelve Masas  make one Vatsara (year). Knowledge should be acquired from  experts by a person desirous of knowing Kala.

From Pratipad (first day of the lunar fortnight) if we  calculate up to the full-moon day, the fortnight becomes complete  (Purna). Hence full-moon day is called Purnima.

The day on which the moon is complete is called Purna  (Purnima). It is a favourite day of Devas. The day on which the  moon vanishes is called Ama by learned men.

It is a great favourite of Pitrs beginning with Agnisvattas.  All these thirty days have certain auspicious times. Listen to some  special features of them, О excellent Brahmanas.Among the Yogas (particular division of time; there are 27 such Yogas) Vyatlpata ; among stars Sravaa; among  Tithis ("Lunar days") Amavasya (new-moon day) and Purnimaа (full-moon day) and Sankranti (i.e. when the sun passes from one  zodiac to another)—these should be known as sacred ones for the  rites of charitable gifts. Ashtami (i.e. the 8th day in a fortnight) is  a favourite of Sambhu and caturthika (the 4th day) of Ganesa. The fifth day (is a favourite) of the king of Serpents; the sixth day that of Kumara (Skanda). It should be known that the  seventh day (is a favourite) of the Sun and the ninth day is a  favourite of Саndikа.It should be known that the tenth day is (a favourite) of  Brahma; the eleventh day that of Rudra; the twelfth day is a  favourite of Vishnu; and the thirteenth day that of Antaka (i.e.  god of death). The fourteenth day is a favourite of Sambhu. There  is no doubt about it. The Caturdasl of the dark half which extends to the mid-night is a Tithi (Lunar day) on which one should  observe fast. It is very excellent and is conducive to the attainment of Sayujya (identity) with Siva. The Tithi of Sivaratri is  well-known as the destroyer of all sins.

In this context they cite this ancient legend-

Devas were eager to achieve their purpose. Therefore,  they hurriedly went on churning the ocean. All those who are  overwhelmed by desires do not listen (to the advice of others),  because they become irrational and stupid. They should not be given many pieces of advice and  instructions. They are subject to Raga (desire) and Dvesa (hat red). All of them are averse to Shiva. With their sheer continuous exertion, they churned the  Ocean of Milk. Due to excessive churning, the poison called  Halahala was generated from the Ocean of Milk. It was strong enough to burn down the three worlds.  It came up to kill the heaven-dwellers. It went up still further  and spread to all quarters. The entire sky was pervaded by it.

Gods approached Shiva, he said "listen to my words with great faith and  attention. This universe consisting of the mobile and immobile  beings is of the form of Ahamkara (Cosmic Ego). This Ahamkara  creates, sustains and destroys. At the beginning of the universe,  Intelligence, Consciousness alone remained. It was devoid of Maya. It was quiescent and of the form  of Dvaita and Advaita (duality and non-duality). It was in  the form of intelligence alone characterized by existence and  eternal bliss.

"The Supreme soul, who supports the seven  worlds, with the use of Sattvaguna, and  sustains them as well, the one who resorts to  creation with the application of rajoguna, and  resorting to tamoguna destroys the same, the  one who is far away from the Maya (illusion)  of the gunas, we meditate upon such a  blissful, lord possessing spotless knowledge,  who is truth, bliss infinite, pure consciousness,  who assumes the names of Brahma, Visnu etc.  and who is attained only with the application  of eternal Sattvaguna."

"I offer my salutation to Siva, who is  pleased merely by offering a salutation to him,  who loves his devotion, who bestows the  complete devotion, who fulfills all the desires,  who is the form of truth, truthful, who  possesses the truth and the fortunes, at all the  three times, who likes and speaks the truth,  who is adored by Brahma and Visnu, and who  takes to human form by his illusion alone."

The third of the great gods of the Hindu Triad is the personification of destruction. The work of creation and preservation being undertaken it was necessary to provide an agent for that of disintegration or destruction, as things created are by an inexorable law liable to decay and dissolution. Siva therefore represents Time, endless and inexorable. Death itself is only a turning of the glass of Time, a rearrangement of indestructible atoms, and a gateway from one court of Life to another. To destroy, therefore, is practically to recreate, and Death stands at the gates of Life.

He is bewildering in the range and variety of his many-hued nature.

In Hindu writings no less than 108 different names are given to him, and most of them indicate separate functions.

On the slightest provocation they break forth and overwhelm his enemies, hence the attribute “ terrible ” ( bhairava ) given to him. A characteristic story is told in the Mahabharata : “ One day as Siva was seated on the Himalayas engaged in austerities, Uma, attended by her companions and dressed as an ascetic, came up behind and playfully put her hands over his eyes. Instantly the world became darkened, lifeless, destitute of oblations. The gloom, however, was dispelled by a great flame which burst from Siva’s forehead, in which a third eye, luminous as the sun, was formed. By the fire of this eye the mountain was scorched and everything upon it consumed.” This flame will one day, it is declared, devour the world.

Originally, when Siva was separate from Shakti, he was pure consciousness. He was without qualities, without form, beyond being and unbeing. When he was united with Shakti, he had attributes, O Brahmana. He had a form and divine features; he was with Uma forever.

Siva was visualised by Narayana as the master, the lord of the universe, lord of all the  gods, the Supreme deity, smaller than the smallest and larger than the largest. He has the  matted locks of hair over the head and is the infuser of life in every form He has a crescent  moon over the  forehead, and is clad in Tiger's skin. He is surrounded by many ghosts and  spirits. He is unborn and can never be sighted by the wicked people. He is the destroyer of  Andhaka and has three eyes and a blue throat and holds  a trident Brahma and Vishnu, also describe him as Mahesvara manifested as a great Yogi,  having effulgent splendour equal to that of the ten million suns put together, lie has also been  described as devouring the sky as it were, with a thousand crores of months and possessed of  a thousand heads and an equal number cf feet, having the sun the moon and the fire as his  eyes.Mahadeva lived in Himalaya mountain and absorbed the Ganges over his head.

Worship of Siva had started in many forms, and even  the various types of  as had been composed in his honour Not only could he protect his  devotees but also could grant them their desired wishes and the weapons. Siva came to be known in the form of linga  and was also established in the form of image  which bestows all the comforts and the  pleasure to the people. But the worship of Siva-linga (emblem, the most  important and the fundamental meaning of which could be a mark or a symbol) as well as his images bestow  welfare to the people, besides the moksa.

Another anecdote from the pure as:

Lord Sambhu wandered about in the forest Daruvana  for the sake of begging alms.

One of the ladies who was struck with wonder asked  Sambhu who endeared himself very much to her: “Who are you,  О excessively intelligent one? Why have you come here as a  mendicant? This is the sacred hermitage of sages. Why do you not sit here in our hermitage?” On being asked thus by her,  Sambhu said laughingly:

“I am Isvara, О lady with excellent tresses; I have come to  this holy place.” On hearing the words of Isvara (Siva) the wife  of the sage asked him: “(You say that) you are Isvara (Siva), О gentle Sir, of  exalted fortune. You are the lord of the Kailasa mountain. But,  О lord, how does it happen that you are begging for alms alone  and single?” On hearing the words spoken by him, the lotus-eyed  lady said: “There is no doubt that women really accord pleasure  by their touch unto man. Such pleasurable women, О Sambhu,  have been eschewed by a learned man like you!”...

I have related my little knowledge of the Puranas. Now I'd like to draw your attention without taking much time how Lord Siva influenced my life.

Let's talk about those who devote their time to acquiring wealth.

It is said ‘Change is the law of Nature.’ Everything in this world is ever changing. The process of movement and change is perpetual. The pendulum of time, the cycle of seasons, the movement of planets, the activities of animals, human beings, all natural elements, life, wind, water etc. are always changing. In this process of change, the chariot of wealth is no exception. A person may be poor today, but he can acquire wealth by dint of his hard work. A wealthy man can become a pamper with the passage of time because of his bad buck and foolish deeds. Man should realise this fact of life and these fore should not hanker after wealth and suffer from false pride and ego. He should acquire wealth through honest means, utilize it for good deeds and also help other needy, poor, deserving people by using his wealth for charitable purposes.

‘Earn a lot, give a lot. May you gather with hundred hands and give as much as with thousand hands.’

Rig Veda

‘There who give charity and look after the welfare of others remain happy always.’

Sãma Veda

I got to hear stories from my late maternal grandma and my mother. I decided on celebrating Maha Sivaratri when I was in college. By then I had quite a few surgeries and my brain surgery was imminent. Few "Friends" asked for going out, bunking class for pizza and movie but I was always limping and honestly on that day I was taking the vrata and had to fast but that heartless and unkind way squelched my thoughts on meditating for recovery by taunting and teasing me like something funny is going on and my parents had launched a wedding search looking for an intelligent excellent looking man like Lord Siva and that's why out of the blue I was keeping the vrata. I never confided to my sassy friends about my disease because of their small-mindedness.

At that age it discouraged me. But my diseases were relentless, I was unaware at that age. From the core of my heart I had worshipped Mahakal. I can recite the Mrtyunjaya Mantra in my mind, and I believe I got over every life-threatening surgery because of ☝Him. I chant the mantra during cyberknife or Radiation therapy and up till now I am alive.

He is my inspiration for the love of life despite such unsteady health and financial conditions. He puts words to my mind as I write poetry, enthusing me to find the right diagnosis and treatment for my diseases. You might ask why do I have to fight my ailment till the end of my life?

The complexity of their existence, the trials of maladies forced them to struggle to live. The will to live is an unstoppable thing. Most people live only when they are about to die.

I believe in my karma...past life karma and I want to attain good karma in this life so that after dissolution and reconstruction I don't suffer.I chant his mantra each night I feel like with determination and willpower I can move Mandar Mountain without the help of Vasuki and see a fiery ball and when I say,

My humble prayers to the my Lord with 108 names

But gave her a dazzling smile

Tarry awhile

The mother becomes a fierce Goddess

Climbing in her old age regardless

"Look around you, don't be blind"

She said with angelic resignation

"Om Namah Shivay" : myth, belief, reality and poetry Part-2

The Great God is the eternal life-principle. He incarnates in  matter and comes within the orbit of individual experience. He is unmanifest in his universal  form, but manifest in each individual body whether of men, animals or plants. At each level of  manifestation, the immortal and divine nature of the Great God is evident. He represents the  predominant effect of existence and the mysterious force called Life or Prana: Mrtyunjaya.

"Lord Bharga (the radiant god),  respect to the lord of Devas, to 'conqueror of  Death’, to Rudra, to Isana 'controller of the world’, to Kapar-din ‘one with matted hair’. Homage to the blue-throated  Nilakantha, Sarva ‘the destroyer of all’, to the lord having  a form with sky as a limb. Obeisance to Kala, the lord of Kala;  obeisance to the lord in the form of Kala.”- said Yama.

He continued "Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds, becomes gratified by great holy rites. There is no doubt about it that he is the  lord (i.e. and bestower) of boons always. So also Lord Visnu who can be comprehended only  through the Vedas and who is the eternal Lord, is delighted by  many Yajnas, fasts and other holy rites. He grants Kevalabhava (‘salvation’) whereby one is liberated. All men (conform to) my opinion. My words cannot be  otherwise. When he is pleased, he grants all worldly pleasures and  the riches of heaven etc. On being bowed down and not otherwise, the Sun-god grants health. The great god Ganesha, if we offer Arghya,  Padya etc. and sandal paste and repeat the Mantras duly, makes  our task free from obstacles.

So also all the other Guardians of the Quarters bestow benefits in accordance with their capacity. О Sankara, they are  pleased with Yajnas, study of the Vedas, charitable gifts etc. This has caused a very great surprise to all the living  beings here that the gateway to heaven has been opened wide.By the vision of Kumaras( sons of Brahma), О Mahadeva, even all the  sinners have become heaven-dwellers. There is no doubt about it. What should be done by me in the matter of deciding  what should be done and what should not be done? Hitherto  only those persons of meritorious deeds, such as those who are  habituated to speak the truth, the quietcent ones, liberal donors,  free and independent ones, those who have conquered their sense  organs, non-covetous ones, those who are devoid of lust and base  attachments, the performers of Yajnas, those who abide by  righteous deeds and those who have mastered the Vedas and the  Vedangas, attained heaven.

Sankara said:

"There are good emotions in the minds of the people of  meritorious deeds whose sins have come to an end, О Dharma.

There is a great desire in them to go to a good holy spot  or to visit good people. This desire is caused by previous Karmas.

It is only at the end of many births and rebirths that a  feeling of devotion to me is generated in the minds of living beings. О Yama, it is the result of many repeated experiences in the  course of many births with all feelings.

Hence all those in whom good feelings of devotion  arise are meritorious ones. What has been the outcome of the  repeated experiences of various births need not cause surprise."

That's why I say Life with its many dark sides, in all its beauty, grandeur, and magnificence is too short. For some life is full of screams, throat getting narrow and swollen, almost strangled. Stifling hopelessness with a tempest building inside. Some enjoy good health. I resuscitate ceaselessly because I am a Warrior Princess being perennially optimistic. God granted me the calmness to accept things that I cannot change, I dare to change the things I can and have the wisdom to know the difference.

It's unusual how lightly people speak about the future as if they can hold it in their hands with the power to push it further off or bring it nearer.God is modest but he's not punishious. Mind and brain are two different things and it's my first-hand experience.I am perpetually stimulated. My mind never hesitates. I have opened the doors and windows of my mind and let every detail in and keep it to spruce up from the foulness. Rather than moving heavily and clumsily with a weary and defeatist attitude, my mind feels a joyous excitement with positive power, never being frustrated. Fear or flatter, lightning or thunder, the mind remains calm.

Death does stalk us all but you can confuse him for some time by a few methods.By rekindling your passion, by doing at least one worthwhile thing. By urging your mind to be passionate about life and what you believe in and channel the energies and enthusiasms into things that we care about and not crush yourself into a jealous existence.

Mahadeva is named as Rudra and Siva in Indian tradition. Siva Mahadeva has been worshipped for thousands of years as the Great God of India. His cult  extended from the homeland of the Sakas in Central Asia to Kanya Kumari or Cape Comorin on the seashore. There are numerous myths and legends associated with him. He was conceived as the God of the Mountain, married to the Daughter of the Mountain. The foremost teacher of Yoga. He expounds all the mystic doctrines and the occult religious cults  of Tantras, Agamas (  collection of Tantric literature) and Samhitas. His great exploits are the vanquishing of the Andhakasura or  the Demon of Darkness, and Tripurasura, the Demon of the three cities of Gold, Silver and  Copper. He is also the controller of the Ten-Headed king of Lanka named Ravana who casts a  challenge to all gods and men.

Siva is identified in the Vedas as the Immortal God, who has entered the mortal beings, who is  the same as Agni or the mysterious Vital Fire manifest in matter or the five whole elements, who  as Yogi consumed the God of Love, Kamadeva and re-created him in the subconscious world of  the human mind and the conscious spheres of the human body or the central nervous system. It  has been a matter of extreme happiness for us to gain an insight into the mysteries of Siva  philosophy for the control  of the Pranic energy. It is this aspect of the symbolism of Siva which received the greatest  emphasis from the Vedic times and in the Puranas and Saiva Agamas.

The great Kailasa is the symbol of the highest mind on which God Siva has his eternal abode as  the Universal Divine Principle wrapped in samadhi or mental illumination where Universal  Consciousness throws open its innermost sheaths for the vision of man. The working and powers  of the cortex or higher brain are still a mystery to modem science. The ancient Yoga-Vidya has  explained them in an orthodox symbolism or terminology which deserves to be studied and  interpreted for the modern man who wishes to understand the fully chartered map of his  personality as expressed on the level of mind, vital airs and material elements. These three are  the basic elements described as the three cities of Gold, Silver and Copper and symbolised as the  demon Tripura, who could be pierced by a single shaft released from the bow of Shiva which is  none other than the central nervous system, named as Sumeru or Pinaka that is the Golden Rod  or Axis of the human body.

The vital energy of Prana is the fiery principle of metabolism.

The half-male and the half-female aspects of Siva symbolise the two Universal Parents also  named as the Father and the Mother or Heaven and Earth throughout Indian literature and also  other great religions of the world.

The Ganga is the river of Life, the great flood descending from immortal heaven to mortal earth.  Shiva's matted locks represent the world or creation in all its modalities and endless forms. The  matted locks are as vast and complicated as the affairs of the world. The River of Life permeates  every nook and corner of the worldly creation. There the flood of pranic energy remains  concealed until it is released by the grace of Siva and as the outcome of the principle of tapas  invoked by human beings. The river is named Ganga owing to her quality of movement, or the  ceaseless flow from the beginning to the end of Time as a mighty stream which makes all bodies  or material forms sanctified by its waters. The great dance of Rudra is demonstrated best in the  rhythmic movements of the sun. Surya is an ideal of Nataraja Siva. The balance and rhythm  underlying both in their dance poses, bespeak of the overriding rhythm which is the basis of  cosmic creation. In each solar system, there is an axis around which all the movements and  regulations are arranged as proceeding from a fixed centre and vertical line. God Siva arranges  his dance steps inside a mandala of fire-flames and so does Surya; the sun-god has his being  inside the periphery of his thousand rays. It should be noted that Surya is not the dead matter orb  of 92 or more elements but according to the Indian conception, it is the visible form of the  supreme divine or transcendent reality called Brahman.

The sun, moon and fire are said to be the triple eyes of the great god. Fire symbolises the central  energy whereas sun and moon, its twofold extension as heat and cold, as light and darkness, or as  the twin principles of Prana and Apara, the in-breath and out-breath, the introvert and extrovert  forces that ceaselessly impact against the centre that remains stable and unmoved. That centre is  called Sthanu, the axis mundi of the universe which is the same as the Great Arrow, Bana  piercing the axial centre of the earth, the atmospheric region and Surya so that the three stand in  integration for all time to come. Time is threefold but eternity is one; it cannot be parcelled out,  however, one may wish to do so. So does the eternal aspect of the Great god remain  undifferentiated and one without a second. But in nature or manifestation it is threefold.

The author of the Yajurveda has clearly said that Surya is the symbol of Brahman( universe), the light of  Brahman is reflected in Surya. If we wish to have an idea of the effulgent lustre of Brahman let  us look at Surya the sun god whose radiation is measureless and who is filling all space by his  shining rays of light and heat up to the ends of the four directions. The full glory of Surya is  beyond description. We may remember that in each orderly system of the world, there is a  central sun representing the charge of energy and power in that system, we have millions and  billions of such dazzling solar units, all placed in one axial alignment; and their totality would  give some indication of the light and energy of Brahman. The same Brahman is the great God  Siva.

The energy of his Tandava dance is beyond the power of words. Constellations are splashed as  particles of dust in space by the movements of his feet. The impact and stirrings of energy released by his movements are beyond description both for science and philosophy. His matted locks dangle this side and that deriving their energised tendencies and dimensions from the  depths of his spiritual being.

Siva is the lord of all creatures and therefore called Pasupati. The word Pasu is significant  denoting a pranic centre. Each pain or living creature is an exemplar of the life-principle. In their  differentiated aspects the pains are numberless and Siva as the archetypal divine principle of life  is the Lord of them all. The bonds that keep them together are known as pasa. Unless these  bonds are loosened both by the grace of the Lord and the endeavour of the devotee, no one can  get rid of them and the soul that is soiled by matter remains bound in the snares of death. The  five elements of gross matter are such a snare from which it is difficult to extricate oneself  without the supreme laws of Salvation or Deliverance becoming operative in the life with which  we are all bound. This is known as Sakrajala (same as Indrajata that is the mesh woven around  the soul which is Indra.

Siva is surrounded by his ganas or hosts and pramathas or deformed beings. They are just  caricatures of the human spirit or cartoons of normal personality, deformed and ugly beings, in  whom the grotesqueness of mind and matter becomes concretised. The world is full of such  specimens and aberrations of the life-principle or prana. They are all subordinated to Siva as the  Lord of Fire or pranic energy; Siva is therefore called Ganapati. The fiery pranic principle when  wedded to its counterpart the Soma or Parvati represents perfection and beauty but the  deformities of the gana hosts are specimens of ugliness that are the hungry spirits yearning for  their share of Soma, the immortal principle of beauty and spiritual satiation. The ganas are  controlled by their leader, Nandisvara, the principle of bliss or Ananda.

On the body of Siva is besmeared dust or the ashes (bhasma). It signifies that fire is always  accompanied by its ashes refused or dross. When fire burns some dross is left over as its surplus.  When food is eaten and processed through the energy of digestive fire (jatharagni), some kind of  surplus is thrown out and then only the process of assimilation remains balanced with that of  elimination. Brahman eats his food called Brahmaudana the boiled rice of Brahman, and when  his bowl of food is consumed and properly assimilated the surplus refuse that follows is the  cosmos.

In fact, lord Siva had been dominating the Indian religious scene from the time immemorial. His  presence has been witnessed in the ancient sites of Harappa and Mohenjodaro. He is also  eulogised in the Vedic literature as Rudra and occasionally as Siva as well, besides by many  other forms. While travelling from the Vedic to the Puranic times there had been a tremendous  boost in his personality and he came to be known in many forms both, benevolent as well as terrific. Out of these, the terrific forms were relegated to the background, and his benevolent  forms became more popular.

Narada also took his seat delightfully so  provided it to him. Having been thus adored by  the sages appropriately, Narada discussed with  them wonderful stories, together with the  glory of the Sivalihgas. At the same time, the  sage Suta, who was well-versed in the Puranas  himself, arrived in order to worship the sages,  in the Naimisaranya. The dwellers of  Naimisaranya welcomed him with the  recitations of studs and songs, because he  happened to be the pupil of (Romahaisana)  Krsnadvaipayana Vyasa. Therefore, all the  sages of Naimisa became desirous of listening  to the stories of the Puranas. Then they  enquired from the sage Suta about the glory of  Sivalinga as propounded in the Puranas.

One should faithfully worship lord Siva - the conqueror  of the death. He bestows liberation as well as worldly pleasures. He is benevolent to all.

"Om Namah Shivay" : myth, belief, reality and poetry : Part 1

The basic unit of life is the nimesha, the instant, now do you get  why I say live in the moment?

The origin of the universe which it traces to Siva, the eternal god who though devoid  of attributes has still an inherent Energy which manifests itself in the form of three principles-Sattva, Rajas and Tamas personified as the three deities Vishnu, Brahma and Rudra.  The three have their respective energies called Laxmi,  Saraswati and Kali, in collaboration with whom they create,  maintain and dissolve the universe.

Kalaiakti  (Power of Time). The entire universe including Devas, Asuras  and human beings is enveloped by them. This world  that is being seen is ultimately imperishable,  but, comprehend that as an evolution it has  consequence it is perishable.

The work of creation entrusted to Brahma who created the cosmic egg consisting of twenty-four principles. The cosmic egg is lifeless like an atom at first but when Vishnu saturates it, it goes into motion. Then different kinds of creation are evolved out of it.

Manu and Satarupa who complied with the wishes of the creator and began the work of creation.

The creation of the universe is not a permanent feature, for all creations end in breakdown or disintegration which in turn give place to re-creation.

The process of deterioration is complicated, for several dissolutions occur before the universe is completely dissolved.  As the puranas relate, a creation lasts for a day of Brahma equal to the age of fourteen Manvantaras. Each Manvantara comprises·  4,32,00 human years or l/14th day of Brahma. The fourteen  Manvantaras make up one whole day of Brahma. Each of the  fourteen Manvantaras is presided over by its own gods, seers  and kings. At the end of  each Manvantara, there occurs a dissolution. Thus a day of  Brahma contains fourteen breakdowns. But these are partial  decays. At the end of fourteen Manvantaras, equal to  a day of Brahma that lasts for a kalpa, there occurs a great  dissolution. Thus during the life of the creator several  creations and dissolutions take place. There occurs a complete dissolution when the creator has completed his life-time.  The elements are dissolved and merged into the body of the  creator. The creator takes rest for some time and then starts  the process of recreating the Universe. Thus we have a  series of dissolutions and recreations succeeding each other. This scheme of Creation and Dissolution repeats  itself from one age of Manu to another and is described in  all the Mahapuranas, Sivapurana is no exception to the  rule.

I can relate a part of creation to science. A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying. Black holes can be big or small. Scientists think the smallest black holes are as small as just one atom. These black holes are very tiny but have the mass of a large mountain. The idea of an object in space so massive and dense that light could not escape it has been around for centuries. Most famously, black holes were predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity, which showed that when a massive star dies, it leaves behind a small, dense remnant core. If the core's mass is more than about three times the mass of the Sun, the equations showed, the force of gravity overwhelms all other forces and produces a black hole. The stellar core can then implode in the production of a supernova or, as is the case for more massive stars, collapse to then form a black hole.

The pandemic we are currently facing is it partial dissolution or permanent? Will the world get merged into the body of the Creator? Will we experience spaghetti fixation?

I believe Lord Siva will be the saviour. When due to excessive churning of the Ocean of Milk poison appeared and Neelkanth drank the whole to save all the lokas he will drink the notorious virus to save creation, before every human is wiped out.

Siva as the eternal principle, the supreme god, the cosmic soul,  the support of all existence. But the ignorant aspirant bound  in the meshes of illusion goes in quest for knowledge and  imagines that his lord has a personal form possessed of attributes distinct from himself, who in moments of distress responds to his prayers and bestows grace. The devotee, then  aspires for spiritual enlightenment and takes to ritual for self purification.Sivapurana enjoins several rites of worship and  acts of homage, comprising a series of physical and spiritual  practices in accompaniment with the Tantra, Yantra and  Mantra appliances. He starts with the threefold devotion.

Rahu fought a very terrible combat with Soma -the  Moon. The Amrta (nectar) arising from the body of the Moon  was imbibed by Rahu. Due to the contact with nectar (another  figure) like Rahu rose up. All these things were seen by Sambhu, the great lord.  “There is no doubt about this that I am the base and support  of all living beings. I am affectionate and dear to all, Asuras as  well as Suras.” On being told thus Rahu bowed down to Siva. The  Moon stationed on his crest discharged nectar out of fear. On  account of it, many such heads were produced simultaneously.  Sambhu made them into a beautiful garland and tied it to his  head like a (decorative) head-ornament.

By swallowing Kalakuta ( poison that rose while the ocean churning) for the purpose of accomplishing the objective of Devas, he became blue-throated with a garland of skulls thus made.Mahesvara wore the garland of skulls.By means of that garland shone the noble-souled Нага,the primordial lord of Devas. He is the  lord by whom the great demon Gaja (Elephant) was struck  down and the huge (demon) Andhaka was reduced to dust. It was Siva by whom Ganga was held in the middle  of his head. He, the dispeller of fear, kept the Moon on his  crest. Vedas, Puranas, Agamas, different kinds of Srutis  and scriptures argue and discuss variously in accordance with  differences in their respective texts. In the course of their discussion they become dumb. Siva, the sole friend of the universe, is  being investigated and described differently according to the  opinion of the preceptors of different Agamas. Abandoning the eternal lord Siva, the supreme spirit  that could be comprehended only through the Vedas, deluded  people commit blunders. They do not realize Siva of the form  of the Great Spirit. Siva is the Paramatma (Supreme Soul) by whom everything is created and sustained. He permeates everything and  evolves everything. The entire universe is a part of this Lord.  He may, perhaps, be comprehended through the Vedanta.

Besides the ancient Indian  literature, even the archaeological evidence is quite vocal on the subject, because the  presence of the  inscription over the seal has not been satisfactorily deciphered. But the deity is supposed to  be the prototype of Siva. Even the pre-Harappan sites of Namazga, Kuli and Zhob in  Afghanistan and Baluchistan, have produced the terracotta images of Siva and don't, besides a  large number of bulls. This goes on to establish the antiquity of the worship of Siva in the  Indian subcontinent In so far as the historical sites are concerned, enough of evidence has  been forthcoming in the form of terracotta artefacts, concerning worship of Siva in the sites  of Ahichhatra, Kausambi, Raj ghat and many others.

Lord Siva is being worshipped in the country and abroad from time immemorial.Lord Siva is beginningless after he attained the position of adoration and worship. Genesis of Siva  worship can be traced in the Harappan culture as well, where he is believed to have been adored  in the human as well as symbolic form. Nandin, his bull, too had immense importance at that  stage of the Indian culture, where the bull is depicted over a large number of seals discovered  from the Harappan sites of the stage of history. In fact, Siva is the great god, Mahadeva. Siva has been found in the Harappan culture commonly known as the Indus valley  civilization, which is believed to be the pre-Vedic The name of the pre-Vedic proto-type of  Siva is not known to us, but Rudra continued to be the principal name of Siva. The Harappan  sites in the country as well as those in Pakistan have produced evidence of the presence of  Siva in the human, as well as the symbolic form. A seal from Harappa displays a homed deity  seated cross legged in the forest, stretching his arms up to the knees, which has been  interpreted to represent Siva, in the form of Pasupati, surrounded by the wild life.

He is  the immortal Divine Principle who has entered the mortal beings. He is known as the Death-conquering Deity, Mrtyunjaya. The Mrityunjaya Mantra is oldest Vedic literature, the Rig Veda (7.59. 12)

oṃ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe

sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam।

urvārukamiva bandhanān

mṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt ॥

English translation:

I worship that fragrant Shiva of three eyes, the one who nourishes all living entities.

May he help us severe our bondage with samsara by making us realise that we are never separated from our immortal nature.

Try-ambakam: “The one with these Three Shaktis :” to him.

  Yajamahe: “We make sacrificial offerings.”

Su-gandhim: “Our lives become fragrant with meritorious deeds, ”   So, awakens the shaktis then

Pushti-vardhanam: “Unto him who nourishes all our shaktis, strengthens and increases  our devotion by His grace, and makes us advance into the spiritual dimension.”

Urvarukam-iva [bandhanat]: “As a melon drops from the vine upon ripening, so also  may we, upon ripening of the fruits of our actions.”

Bandhanat, Mrtyoh: “From bondage that is death.

Mukshiya: “Be released, attain moksha.”

Ma-amrtat: “May I never again be parted from  amrta, from the immortality of Atman,  the Spiritual Self, or Parama-Atman, the Supreme Self’

The Mahamrityunjay Mantra is a famous verse found in the Rig Veda which glorifies a "three-eyed deity".

There was once a sage named Mrikandu who dwelled with his wife,  Marudmati. They did not have any son and hence decided to take upon deep and long  penance to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva for getting blessed with a son. With great  devotion, the couple underwent deep penance, as a result of which Lord Shiva got  impressed with them and granted them the boon they wished for, but the blessing came yet there was a condition. Lord Shiva gave them an option to choose between an intelligent and wise son with a short life span and a foolish son with a long life. Sage  Mrikandu happily accepted the boon to be blessed with an intelligent son with a short  life. Soon after, they had a son whom they named as Markandeya.  Slowly and steadily young Mankandeya started growing under the love and affection of  his dear parents. As his sixteenth birthday was about to approach, the parents started getting nervous. They grew sad day by day which Markandeya could  sense easily. He asked his parents the reason for their remorse and sadness to which they  narrated the entire story to their son and the boon granted by Lord Shiva. Markandeya  was very intelligent and devotional. He began his penance in front of a Shivling, chanting  along with the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. Lord Yamaraj, the God of death, came to take  Markandeya on his sixteenth birthday but Markandeya was totally engrossed with his  penance. He wrapped himself around the Shivling, embracing it with his two arms, not  willing to let go. However, Lord Yamaraj was too determined to take the young boy with  him. Hence, he threw the noose to catch hold of him but by mistake, it got held around  the Shivling. Instantly Lord Shiva appeared and since he got extremely annoyed, he  killed Yamaraj on the spot.

This incident of Lord Yamaraj’s death travelled across all the three worlds. All the devtas  came to Lord Shiva and on their earnest request Lord Shiva revived Yamaraj but on one  condition that Markandeya would now live for life long. He would remain untouched  forever. Later on, as time passed, Markandeya became a great sage on whom an entire Purana has been composed by the name of Markandeya Purana. As per the Hindu  scriptures, Markandeya is alive even today.

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is a great death-conquering mantra, it is a verse of the Rig  veda-7.59.12. It is also called the Rudramantra, referring to the furious aspect of Lord  Shiva, the Tryambakam mantra, alluding to Shiva’s three eyes. It is also called as  Mritasanjivani mantra because it is a component of life-restoring practice. The benefits  of mantra, it restores physical, mental, emotional health and it is a Moksha mantra which  bestows longevity and immortality.

Nobody is immortal, everyone has his own expiration date. The closer you get to death, the more intensely you live. Only when you are coping with a somewhat death sentence. You shall try to live a self-indulgent life before realizing that this does not fulfill the meaning of existence. That shouldn't happen in life.

One should live on actively with courage and without any fear. All evil thoughts and actions must be avoided. Body, mind and spirit must be kept clean and pure. One should not be enchanted by the temptations and unnecessary pleasures of material life and in this manner remain free from sensual attachments and ignoble desires. If we live a life of purity without evil thought and actions, God will surely grant us happiness and prosperity.

For me chanting the mantra is a way to get courage to face multiple rare diseases which has reached a crisis where there is possibility of take off from the world bidding adieu to all.

The world is a tragedy to those who feel, but a comedy to those who think. ~ Horace Walpole.

The lifetime blues made me face anything and the nerves caused disorders that became the target of treatment and debate between doctors. Oh, no! I don't have any psychological illness but physiological disorders.A deeper import lurks in the legend told my infant years than lies upon that truth we live to learn. One of the intellectual strengths of humans is the ability to imagine impossible things. When you have the fullest flower of intelligence, personality, and pluck.

The mind is bogged down by lingering illness, it goes swoon to a tee but those who want to flee are held by a shackle to God's project "Earth". With multiple  horrible redundant ailments have nothing to lose, I can't try to live again a perfect life, relaxed and healthy, under trees bearing chocolates, mountains of books but being less imaginary I say I don't want to lose this life with my Mum and the instances of delights divided by twilight. I never had depressions and listlessness. Modern antidepressants, which can benefit people in temporary grief in reaction to life events, or suffering from internal, chronic depression are there. They may make you look cheerful but watching Tv, cooking, going to different places does it make you internally happy? Pretty strong things in life, depressions, withered hopes but still in poverty I am lucky to have my own pluck. Don't cackle, my mind dances with fun. I am not immoderately slothful yet I vex very easily. Knowledge is power, ignorance about your disease will lead you nowhere. I write for Times of India without any honorarium to gain knowledge and keep my mind involved. I write or read chanting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. My mind swayes in the articulation of the words. I feel it's more powerful than any anti dissociative drugs. I honour every moment while chanting the powerful mantra. Death will put an end to it hence I enjoy little birds singing on the leafy branches, warm bright sunshine light up the cloudless sky.
